ADVANCED STUDIO

THE PERISCOPE

FALL 2023

The studio focused on creating a community that promotes the well-being of students at Georgia Tech. The existing terrace of the Architecture building was considered the site and the design had to work within these strong constraints of the existing structure.

The design focuses on physical and metaphysical connections to establish a campus beacon—a day landmark and night lantern. Positioned atop the West Architecture building, it maintains its own identity without altering the existing structure.

It promotes togetherness for a safer campus and alleviates loneliness by creating habitable public spaces and programs, strategically aligning with key axes to create a visual cue.

The Process.

The process of design involves understanding the idea of a periscope. A simple mass that uses certain predefined constraints was modified into the concept of Periscope - " Lantern / Beacon" for the context of the Georgia Tech campus. The slideshow below depicts the process followed.

The project uses Vierendeel Truss as the main structure to lightly touch the existing structure by creating a contrast with the existing one and maintaining its identity.
